Poet,Published Author

Paulette Kosak at Soulasylumpoetry.com I grew up on the high, sunny desert of Southern California. The Mojave has a beauty all its own, orange poppies undulating in the wind as far as you can see, it takes your breath away! Once you’ve seen it, you’ll never forget it. Nature paints with a palette more vibrant that we can duplicate! I’ve always stood in awe of the world we live in.

From childhood I’ve been a gypsy in my soul. I always knew my gypsy parents left me on the doorstep of this nice normal family and someday they would return for me. I say this because I love to wander down roads less traveled, always wondering who might have walked this way before and like Dolly Parton I do it wearing sequins!

Love of wandering, has taken me on many adventures both in the real world and my imaginary one. I came along much later than my siblings and so grew up by myself. When you live on a fifty-acre ranch in the middle of the Mojave Desert, believe me, you learn to use your imagination pretty early!

I met my darling husband on a trip into the Trinity Mountains of Northern California, fifteen years ago. Picture me, the Los Angeles hairdresser, with long red fingernails and flashy clothes (remember I’m a gypsy) meeting a born and bred mountain man in an old gold rush town I’d never heard of much before I got there! Then picture this unlikely pair falling madly in love and courting across six hundred miles and totally different cultures and you have another story I’ll write someday.

We promptly moved to Alaska and fell in love with the last great American frontier. While living there I nearly died, the local doctors couldn’t figure out what was killing me. They didn’t even know I was dying until it was almost too late to save me.  I was flown out of Sitka in the spring of 1991, paralyzed and in complete renal failure. When the doctors told us I the bad news, they asked where I would like to be flown to, because the hospital on our island was just a tiny one without any life saving equipment.

I said, “If I’m going to die, I want to do it at home in Los Angeles where my parents, my sister and brother and where my children are.”

My sweetheart said it was the longest day of his life during the eight-hour flight from Sitka to LAX but I survived it and the amazing staff at UCLA diagnosed me with Lupus and won the fight to save my life.

Author Poet, Artist, Paulette Kosak, at Soul Asylum Poetry and Publishing Inc.Today we live in Northern California, in the shadow of the mountains where we met and fell in love. I’ve learned how precious life is and what a joy it is to awaken each day and draw breath into my lungs. We have four children between us and 15 grand children! (Okay, they took it very seriously to be fruitful and multiply! lolol)

Everyday is a gift and there is no time to waste on could haves, would haves, or should haves! I lost sight of my dream of writing once but never again.

Currently, I have two novels in print that, hopefully, will soon be available in the Soul Asylum Book Store. I also post my poetry here on Soul Asylum Poetry and I count myself fortunate in that gift. My first novel was one of three Honorable Mentions awarded in the 2007 Jada Press International Fiction competition. My poetry has been published in several poetry chap books over the years.

There is today to live to the fullest and to make dreams come true! I’m writing and illustrating again and it feels wonderful putting pen to paper, working furiously to get the story down and to share the colorful visions that dance inside my head with you.

What follows is a gallery of my illustrations, portraits, oils and porcelain doll creations.
